Atlas Copco Previews Minetruck MT85
Atlas Copco gave attendees a sneak peek at the world's largest articulated underground mining truck, the Minetruck MT85, at MINExpo in Las Vegas, Sept. 24 to 26.
Ben Thompson, product manager at Atlas Copco's underground rock excavation division, explained, "This truck is designed to fit the same drift dimensions of 50 to 60 metric ton class trucks with one essential difference: It will haul 85 metric tons [93 tons] which gives a tremendous productivity boost in terms of fewer trucks and more ton/kilometers per hour."
Thompson emphasized that the Minetruck MT85 also is fast and highly maneuverable on ramps and inclines.
"This means that fewer cycles need to be made which, in turn, reduces the cost of transport in relation to the amount of material hauled. Not only that, the new MT85 truck now gives mining companies a more cost effective way to haul ore in the mine. It makes it more attractive to go for deeper ore bodies by ramp instead of sinking a shaft."
The Minetruck MT85 has high capacity with a compact footprint. It is 11.1 ft. (3.4 m) wide and 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) high, easily fitting into 19.7 by 19.7 ft. (6 by 6 m) drifts. And despite its length (46 ft./14 m), it has an impressive turning radius of 40 degrees, which is largely due to its electro-hydraulic steering of the rear axle that gives maximum maneuverability, according to the manufacturer.

Hitachi Introduces EH5000AC-3 Rigid Frame Hauler
Hitachi's new rigid frame hauler — the EH5000AC-3 — is the first hauler to feature the company's Advanced Hitachi AC Drive System.
The EH5000AC-3 is Hitachi's largest rigid frame hauler. It features a Cummins QSKTTA60-CE diesel engine that generates 2,850 hp (2,125 kW) at 1,900 rpm and meets EPA Tier II emission requirements.
The all-hydraulic actuated braking system provides precise braking control and quick system responses, and a new Hitachi system monitor provides display information and diagnostics of all onboard systems and controls.
