Drop deck trailers are also known as step deck trailers or lowboys. A drop deck is a type of flatbed trailer that has two decks. The front deck of the drop deck trailer is typically shorter than the length of the main deck. Drop deck trailers benefit transport of loads that are too tall to fit on regular flatbeds that have a uniform deck. Thanks to the drop in the second deck, these trailers are below the height of standard flatbed trailers.
Drop deck trailers typically come with ramps on the front and rear decks to assist with loading and unloading of items. These trailers are able to carry large machinery, tractors, and freight that is over nine feet tall. Drop deck trailers do not have sides or a top, so it limits what they are able to haul. Without these restrictions, it is easier to load and unload items onto it. There is typically no need for a forklift to assist with loading.
