The heavy machinery marketplace presents outstanding opportunities to recoup your investment and connect with shoppers when you sell equipment. To keep your transaction secure, it’s important to watch out for scammers, as fraudulent buyers may try to take advantage of sellers with fake payments, identity theft, or other deceptive tactics. To protect yourself, you want to use a trusted online marketplace such as Equipment Trader to sell, and do your part to keep your sale safe. Here are six tips to help stop scams when selling equipment.

1. Recognize Red Flags

Scammers might exhibit suspicious behavior that raises red flags when you sell, so if something feels off, trust your instincts and proceed with caution. Several tactics that can be a cause for concern include up-front offers to buy your equipment without seeing it first or requesting unusual payment methods like wire transfers, gift cards, or only cash. When you’re communicating with the shopper, pay attention to their messaging and look out for poor grammar or generic responses that don’t reference your specific listing. If you feel pressured to complete a deal quickly, you can always back away.

2. Verify the Buyer’s Identity

Safeguard the sale and do what you can to ensure the buyer is legit by verifying their identity. Ask for their full name, business name if they’re making a purchase on behalf of a company, and contact details. You can reach out to their company online to confirm it exists and do a check on their reviews. If they hesitate to provide basic information, it could be a warning sign of a scam. Get to know the buyer as one way to have safe transactions when selling equipment.

3. Exercise Caution with Payments

Stop financial fraud and only accept secure and traceable payments. When you finalize your transaction, you can have your trusted financial institution oversee the payment and documentation for the sale. If the purchase is being made with a certified check, verify it with the issuing bank prior to releasing the equipment. If it’s a bank wire transfer, confirm the receipt before transferring ownership. Avoid personal checks, overpayments, or requests to use an unfamiliar third-party payment service. Use only reputable and authenticated escrow services during the sale.

4. Protect Personal and Financial Information

Scammers can pose as buyers with no intention of actually acquiring your machinery in order to steal sensitive information. Never provide your bank account details, Social Security number, login credentials, or any other personal information that could lead to identity theft. If a buyer asks for excessive personal data, cut off communication immediately.

5. Meet in a Safe Location

It’s a good idea to have a serious shopper want to meet up, inspect the equipment, and test it out before they make a purchase. When you do so, choose a safe meeting place, preferably during daylight business hours in public at a secure location (potentially with surveillance). If possible, bring a friend or colleague for the meeting to witness this part of the transaction. Avoid remote or private settings where you might be vulnerable or your safety could be at risk.

6. Report Suspicious Shoppers

Stop future scams from happening when selling and report suspicious behavior. If you suspect a scam online, report the buyer’s information with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). This is a safe and easy method of reporting cyber crimes, as IC3 will refer your report to law enforcement or regulatory agencies at federal, state, local, and international levels. If you believe you’ve received a suspicious email that could be a scam when selling, report it to Equipment Trader’s parent company Trader Interactive at fraud@traderinteractive.com. Visit Trader Interactive’s Security Center to learn more ways to fight fraud.
