The great thing about tractors is that they come in a variety of sizes. Their versatility is unmatched in agricultural operations on everything from thousand-acre commercial settings to five-acre plots. But what if you want to start or manage a small farm and you have a limited budget for equipment?

To help you get started on your search, we put together a list of popular used compact tractors that have strong reputations for providing great value and service. We have a nationwide selection of new and used tractors to choose from, so when the time is right, you can find the perfect machine for your needs.

Defining “Small” Tractors and Farms

First, let’s talk about the tractors. A compact tractor is a scaled-down agricultural machine that typically offers 20 to 60 horsepower. Modern models also feature a versatile three-point hitch and a Power Take-Off (PTO), which is a splined, rotating shaft that transfers your tractor’s engine power directly to heavy-duty attachments such as rotary cutters, tillers, snow blowers, and chippers. This eliminates the need for implements to have their own motors. Compact equipment and smaller tractors are ideal for property management, landscaping, and light farming duties on tracts up to 25 acres.

As for small farms, they are defined by the United States Department of Agriculture by revenue rather than acreage. By the USDA’s classification, a small farm is any agricultural operation with a gross annual cash income of less than $350,000. However, most people define the size of a small farm as anything less than 50 acres.

There are also different designations for small farms:

  • Retirement Farms, where the primary operator is retired but maintains a farm to keep active.
  • Residential/Lifestyle Farms (Hobby Farms), where the primary operator’s main occupation is off-farm, and the farm is run for enjoyment, food, or supplemental income.
  • Low-Sales Farms, where the primary operator’s principal occupation is farming but generates less than $150,000 per year.
  • Moderate-Sales Farms, also where the primary operator’s principal occupation is farming, but they bring in between $150,000 and $349,999 annually.

One additional word about small farms versus hobby farms: Hobby farms are technically a type of small farm but are distinct from commercial operations. Hobby farms are lifestyle choices meant to bring homeowners closer to nature, house horses, or grow food primarily for family consumption. Commercial small farms rely on direct-market produce, value-added products, or niche crops to support themselves.

Let’s Talk Tractors

Now that we have our definitions out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the used tractors you may want to investigate in order to help you with whatever kind of farming operations you have in mind.

Kubota L2501

The Kubota L2501 is a highly popular, user-friendly compact tractor featuring a 24.8-horsepower diesel engine. It remains in demand on the market because it does not need the complex Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or emissions regeneration system required of engines with 26 horsepower or more. Its full production release was in 2015 and was actively produced until 2023 when the upgraded L2502 succeeded it.

L2501 offers a three-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine and is available in either an eight-speed Gear Drive (DT) or a three-range Hydrostatic Transmission (HST) for easy forward and reverse operation. It comes with a live-independent PTO and a three-point hitch with a capacity of 1,918 pounds. Other popular used Kubota models include the L3901, BX1870, BX2380, and B3350.

John Deere 1025R

The John Deere 1025R is a highly versatile, sub-compact utility tractor well suited for properties that are five acres in size or less. Powered by a 25-horsepower, three-cylinder diesel engine, it offers standard four-wheel drive and a hydrostatic transmission with Twin Touch pedals for easy forward and reverse control. It comes with an 18-horsepower PTO and features a premium operator’s station with tilt steering, cruise control, and an adjustable, suspension-style seat with armrests. It has been in continuous production since 2013. Other popular John Deere models include the 3025E, 650, 750, 5410, 2025R, and 2240.

Ford 3000

The Ford 3000 was manufactured from 1965 to 1975 and was part of Ford’s “Global 1000” series. It is still considered a very dependable tractor based on its simple mechanics and excellent fuel economy. It features either a 2.6-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine or 2.9-liter, three-cylinder diesel engine with a standard four-speed, six-speed, or eight-speed manual transmission, with the optional 10-speed Select-O-Speed power shift. The 3000 also provides a Category I three-point hitch with a lift capability of more than 1,7000 pounds, as well as a 540 RPM PTO with live PTO options available.
